Pit was started by Wessel and Matt in the bittersweet summer of 2019. Covid-19 had just made its way into The Netherlands and had rendered most the event organizers and music professionals out of a job. We needed to put our energy elsewhere, somewhere positive - Ginger Beer. It's our favorite drink/mixer and we always wanted to make it ourselves. After thoroughly researching a couple of YouTube tutorials - Pit's adventure began.
We started with making our first ginger bug, fermenting a batch in a big jerrycan and gave it to our friends. They liked it! It was exciting to see the process take form and it sparked the idea of bigger possibilities.
We repeated this process hundreds of times until we found the right balance and ingredients. It became apparent that the ingredients made the drink.
With our newfound confidence in making ginger beer we started approaching breweries. We would quickly learn that most breweries did not want 'wild yeast' in their pipes. Especially not the beer brewing ones.
We had to change our approach so we started making Pit as a soda. We learned that using the right freshly pressed ginger gave Pit the same kick and flavor as the original fermented recipe did.
After tweaking the Pit recipe time after time we reached a beautiful sweet and spicy flavor that works perfectly as either a standalone drink or in a cocktail such as a dark 'n' stormy or Moscow mule.
Pit aspires to produce ginger beer in the most sustainable means possible and practices responsible production and consumption.
Pit is brewed in Amsterdam and can be found in multiple shops and bars throughout The Netherlands.
Pit Ginger Beer
Taste
With self-selected fresh ginger juice from Peru and the best dried ginger combination, Pit has a unique taste compared to existing commercial ginger beers.
Pit has dried ginger root from Nigeria and caramelized organic cane sugar for a warm character, this provides our drink with the body it needs. In our opinion it makes for an earthy and nutty foundation. To finish the flavor we've
added fresh
Peruvian ginger juice which contains beautiful fresh citrus notes. Pit is completely natural and contains no extracts or aromas. The real ginger we use provides the person drinking with a great spicy sensation in the throat, similar to having ginger tea or a ginger shot.
Peruvian Ginger is robust and has an intense flavor. Typically grown in the Junin region of Peru, the ecological conditions give it a citrusy flavor and a beautiful yellow color.
Fresh & Dried African Ginger
Nigerian and Cameroonian ginger is considered some of the best in the world due to its aroma, pungency and high-oil content. With a slightly darker colour than other gingers, African ginger gives an intense but satisfying kick which is perfectly complemented by the citrusy elements of the Peruvian ginger.
